Timing of the Start up is of a Jatropha Plantation is of extreme
importance and should be well planned. There is a window of
opportunity during the warm and rainfall season to get the
plantation established failing which one would have to wait until
the next season to begin. The idea is to avoid the high cost of
expensive irrigation and to get saplings into the ground so as to
benefit from rainfall and natural climatic conditions.
Potting and
Sowing require soil a temperature of between 24 26 degrees and
must start as soon as it gets warm in spring. Potted or bagged
plants in the Nursery will require irrigation, where there is
no rainfall during this period. Tree planting must be carried out
when the rainfall starts and throughout the entire rainfall season. Once the
transplanted Jatropha saplings have taken there
will be no need to irrigate when the rainfall stops.
The use of
advanced equipment will aid organised development initiatives in
third countries to quickly establish Jatropha plantations resulting
in progress in real terms at grass roots level.

Filling
and Seeding Equipment
Large-scale Plantations in the
region of 1000ha to 10,000ha plus are a major challenge in
establishing Jatropha farms quickly and effectively. The limited
number of saplings that can be propagated before the natural
rainfall window of opportunity arises diminishes large-scale
planting operations. The following mechanised equipment will
facilitate the bagging of at least 86,400 seeds per day per machine
in a 9-hour day.

Media magazine
1.5m3 holding capacity
The line requires 108 liters/min of
growing media to fill 12 trays/min
Recommend use of a small front-end
loader (or Bobcat) to fill the media magazine required every 14
minutes.
The magazine also incorporates an
agitator that can be used for mixing fertiliser or any other
component into the media. A spray line is also included should water
be added to the mix.
Operators platform optional. This
allows for monitoring of the mixing process, if needed.
Media feeding belt
Media is automatically fed from the
Magazine into the hopper of the Filler.
Feeding is activated through a level
detecting sensor on the Fillers hopper which signals to the
Magazine to open the bottom hatch and the media-feeding belt to feed
the media into the hopper.
The belt has ribs to ensure fast
feeding and self-cleaning rollers for extended lifetime.
Flexi Filler
The Filler is customised to the plastic
or biodegradable trays used to ensure normal or soft feeding of
the biodegradable tray for filling.
Dibbler
Dibbling of the media to create a
centre hole in the cavity for sowing.
Precision seeder
This seeder is customised for sowing
Jatropha seed and includes a program for single, double or triple
seeding, depending on the germination rate of the seed.
Seeding accuracy is generally >98%. For
Jatropha an accuracy of 99.5% may be expected.
Tray covering unit
Applying an even layer of covering
material over the seed to create even germination conditions.
Accumulation

Allows for accumulation of trays while
loading trolleys to be transported to the nursery

Although the
Biodegradable Compostible Nursery Planter Tray is designed for the
quick and effective establishment of Jatropha
plantations, the product can be used for all Agricultural sectors
where a different size or capacity are required. The biodegradable
tray may also be used with or without mechanised seeding and filling
equipment.
How it Works:
Seeds are sown in the trays using a planting medium and cared for in
a nursery environment. Once the saplings have grown to a
transplantable size, the tray may be separated into individual
saplings by breaking each segment of the tray along a perforated
division. Each segment together with sapling contained therein to be
out planted and buried together at the depth of the intact root
system.
Benefits:
The advantage of this product is that it provides a streamlined
farming method for quick and effective establishment of large
plantations. Practices that are expected to change will be:

to remove a
planter bag from the root structure.

agricultural and forestry sectors are the key areas for setting
goals to guide and advance action on climate change.

Sustainable
Eco-friendly products have become a mainstream issue provoking
concern for climate change and the environment. The use of
biodegradable products in developing this sector will produce
fewer harmful environmental effects and contribute towards the
reduction of carbon emissions while meeting Kyoto Treaty
commitments. The use of biodegradable seed trays will therefore
mitigate the Green House Gas Life Cycle.
